About UN MDG
Under the guidance of the United Nations, the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) - which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 - form a blueprint agreed to by all the world's countries and all the world's leading developing institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world's poorest.
Halfway to a 2015 deadline, there has been clear progress in implementing the Millennium Development Goals, but their overall success is still far from assured. A progress report by the United Nations has found that their future success will depend upon, to a great extent, whether developed countries make good on their aid commitments. Your support of the global community is needed and your involvement can make a difference.
The eight goals are:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
